Handwriting Group

Occupational Therapists are specifically trained to assess the underlying causes of poor handwriting, be it difficulties in fine motor strength & coordination, postural challenges, or deficits in visual perception abilities.

Prior to commencing our handwriting group we conduct a 1:1 assessment with each child to identify baseline levels of functioning and establish appropriate handwriting goals.

The purpose of the group is to provide effective treatment through small group therapy. Our aim is to:

  • improve posture, core strength, and muscle/joint stability
  • build finger and hand strength and pencil grip
  • develop visual perception skills necessary for legible handwriting

When should you refer your child for help with their handwriting?

  • immature pencil grip (held by more fingers than just the index and thumb, or by the whole hand in a immature grip)
  • maintaining an awkward posture during writing tasks (e.g. holding head close to the table or leaning backwards with arm extended
  • difficulty with letter formation
  • inconsistency in letter shape, size, form, and spacing
  • slow, laborious handwriting or handwriting that is painful for your child
  • leans heavily on the page when writing, drawing, or painting
  • colouring, painting or handwriting not at a similar level to peers/classmates
  • messy, illegible handwriting or messy colouring
  • difficulty copying patterns
